The Department of Psychiatry at Penn State College of Medicine, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center will sponsor its second Annual Sleep Disorders Medicine Symposium on November 3 and 4, 2006, at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

The event focuses on daytime sleepiness and fatigue and is designed for primary care, sleep medicine, internal medicine and other physicians, as well as psychiatrists, psychologists and other mental health professionals. Internationally renowned experts from Penn State and other major universities will lead sessions exploring the critical features and mechanisms of sleep regulation as well as the assessment, epidemiology, and treatment of sleep apnea, narcolepsy/hypersomnia, obesity and associated psychiatric disorders.

“Other lectures will examine sleep deprivation and its effects on daytime performance, sleepiness in adolescents, and the relationship between sleepiness and ‘burnout’,” said Edward Bixler, PhD, event coordinator and research director of the Sleep Research and Treatment Center at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. The conference concludes with updates on neurological and clinical aspects of Restless Leg Syndrome and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
