PBS’ Nova asks: Why do we sleep? And what does sleep have to do with memory, trauma, and our emotions?
From fruit flies to whales, virtually every animal sleeps. But why? Why do we need to spend nearly a third of our lives in such a defenseless state? Scientists are peering more deeply into the sleeping brain than ever before, discovering just how powerful sleep can be, playing a role in everything from memory retention and emotional regulation to removing waste from our brains. So why are we getting so little of it? (Premiered February 26, 2020)

Thanks for listing this excellent program. I was very impressed with the program content and participants. I was, however, disappointed in the sound track. The loud, ‘dramatizing’ noise mixed over almost all of the spoken words makes understanding the message very difficult. Because of its excellent content, I want to use this program in educating our investors, potential business partners, and future customers. When I approached WBGH, the NOVA program’s listed producer, requesting permission to do so, permission was refused, but the reason for refusal was not explained. In response to my request for a ‘no-dramatic-noise’ version, I was told that it was not possible to produce such a version.
I want to be able to provide attractive and appropriate educational materials to help advance the cause of healthier sleep. To be refused permission to do so, without explanation, is not acceptable. To be required to accept the current noise-filled ‘edu-tainment’ sound track in such an important public service media offering as inevitable and immutable is also not acceptable.
Perhaps your producer could have a discussion with the producer/s of the NOVA program on sleep? I would greatly appreciate hearing back if you have any news!
