Home respiratory diagnostic provider VirtuOx has entered into insomnia-related services.

Its new VirtuSOM Insomnia Testing service uses overnight electroencephalogram (EEG) to assess sleep architecture and continuity in the patient’s home or in the hospital. “With a head band containing just 3 sensors on your forehead, VirtuSOM can validate your insomnia symptoms or reveal underlying causes,” the company states on its website.

Similar to the logistics of home sleep testing services for sleep apnea, VirtuOx’s insomnia program delivers the EEG device to the patient’s door with instructions and provides them with a 24/7 technical support line and a prepaid mailing label for equipment return. VirtuOx says the physician’s report is completed in about 2 to 3 days.

If the patient is diagnosed with insomnia, then VirtuOx can also connect him/her to an online program by Magellan Health (which acquired the platform from Cobalt Therapeutics) that provides virtual cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). Magellan’s self-guided insomnia program has been shown to decrease the time it takes to fall asleep, increase total amount of sleep, and reduce the need for medication.
