The Inspire II system, manufactured by Inspire Medical Systems Inc for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), was recently implanted into a human subject for the first time, according to the company.

An investigational device not currently for sale, the implantable Inspire II system delivers electrical stimulation to the patient, preventing the closure of the upper airway that can stop airflow in patients with OSA. Its unique closed-loop system is able to sense respiratory effort and deliver stimulation to keep the airway open and breathing normal.
