Surkin is triple board certified in sleep medicine, cardiology, and nuclear cardiology and is in private practice in eastern North Carolina. He is the founder of the American Academy of Cardiovascular Sleep Medicine (AACSM), which is dedicated to advancing the knowledge base pertaining to the convergence of cardiovascular disease and sleep disorders. This fall, the AACSM will be holding its first full membership meeting at a new conference called Sleep Disorders and Chronic Care. With the help of the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines, Chronic Care 2016 will call top medical and dental experts to propose integrative, collaborative solutions to the comorbid conditions of this public healthcare crisis. Mogell has practiced general, neuromuscular, and cosmetic dentistry for over 25 years. A passion for patient welfare, combined with his breadth of dental experience, led Mogell to complete extensive training in the field of dental sleep medicine to ensure the effective and appropriate treatment of patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. In the last decade, Mogell has gained recognition among physicians, dentists, and patients for his ability to effectively treat and manage patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea using oral appliance therapy. In 2013, Mogell became the first Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine in Palm Beach County and one of only three (as of 2016) in the state of Florida. Mogell is a past president of the University of Florida College of Dentistry Alumni Association. He is a member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, American Academy of Sleep Medicine, National Sleep Foundation, Florida Dental Association, and the International Association of Comprehensive Aesthetics. He is a Fellow with the American Academy of Pain Management. He is a member of Sleep Review‘s editorial advisory board.
