The revised standards for accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) are now available online and take effect on July 1, 2009.

Applicant facilities will be given the opportunity to apply for accreditation using either the newly revised or the current standards until July 1, 2009. There will be no option to grandfather into accreditation under a previous set of standards after this date. Verification of compliance for accredited facilities will occur during reaccreditation.

A presidential task force was appointed in January 2008 to evaluate the AASM’s accreditation policies. According to the AASM, this task force then made revisions in order to develop standards that are quantifiable and verifiable. Following a comment period open to AASM membership in May 2008, the task force again reviewed the standards and the AASM board of directors approved a finalized document in December 2008.
