In a video, USA Today explains some of the key symptoms of insufficient sleep.
“The first thing that goes is your ability to think,” said Joseph Ojile, M.D., a board member with the National Sleep Foundation and founder of Clayton Sleep Institute in St. Louis. Judgement, memory and concentration all suffer impairment by the body’s 17th hour without sleep, he said.
I work third shift and I usually stay up 24 hours once a week. Its’s not something I enjoy doing, but it is a side effect of my shift. I am sure many others can agree. I have a strategy for dealing with this:
1.) When my work work starts to begin again (Monday Night) that Sunday over the weekend I will try and stay up as late as possible and hopefully wake up Monday morning past 8am. I am usually 1 hour under that at 7am.
2.) My second strategy is to take a nap Monday afternoon, to prepare for working Monday night. however this doesn’t help if you hate naps like myself. So I usually aim for my 1st option or goal.
I have developed many strategies for third shift and how to avoid staying up for days and how to get proper sleep. Of course this took me about a year to figure out. I have been doing this lifestyle for about 13 years. I actually don’t mind it.
