They’re beginning a study that looks at sleep, circadian rhythms and cardiovascular health in retired shift workers and retired day workers. The hypothesis is that shift work can lead to persistent problems in those areas. About 15 percent of the U.S. population are retired shift workers. Dr. Daniel Buysse, UPMC chair in sleep medicine and professor of psychiatry and clinical and translational science, Pitt School of Medicine, answers questions about sleep and shift work.
