Schenck is an associate professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School, Minneapolis. He is also a senior staff psychiatrist at the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center and Hennepin County Medical Center. He recently wrote and published Sleep: The Mysteries, the Problems, and the Solutions. Schenck also coproduced Sleep Runners: The Stories Behind Everyday Parasomnias, a documentary film about parasomnias. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York and completed a residency in psychiatry at the University of Minnesota. Johns has worked in sleep medicine for more than 18 years (and more than 35 years in respiratory therapy). He is director of sleep and respiratory services for Pulmonary & Sleep Associates of Topeka, Kan. Walter, a neurologist and co-medical director of Capitol Sleep Medicine Sleep Diagnostic Center in Grove City, Ohio, is also author of REM Illumination, Memory Consolidation. The book focuses not on what dream symbols may mean, but on how and why we dream. It covers such topics as why REM sleep and dreaming are important to being alert and well functioning during the day, how dreams may help us learn by allowing us to remember more, and why sleep apnea and other sleep disorders that disrupt REM sleep can impair memory.
