Sleep Review SoundcastWednesday, May 27, 2009 Assessing Pain in Relation to Sleep Complaints, Part 2Special guest: Michael Smith, PhD Michael Smith, PhD, is assistant professor of psychiatry at John Hopkins University. In this podcast, Smith concludes his lecture on assessing pain in relation to sleep complaints and discusses the relationship between sleep, pain, and suicidal ideation. I was just astounded by the rates of suicidal ideation I was hearing at my evaluations, Smith said. In a sample of 153 chronic pain patients, nearly 20% reported passive suicidal ideation. Five percent of the people who came through the door actually reported active suicidal ideation with intent. Pain patients are at an increased risk for it [suicidal ideation]. We need to ask people about it. It's an opportunity for you to save a life. Listen to the podcast to hear more from Smith's presentation.
