Sleep Schools


Since 1992, the Atlanta School of Sleep Medicine & Technology, Atlanta, has offered introductory courses and review courses for physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants in clinical polysomnography in Atlanta and San Diego for more than 4,000 physicians and health care professionals. Four-day introductory courses are designed for physicians, and 7-day courses, which will be expanded to include an online program in late 2007, are designed for technologists and allied health care professionals. The Atlanta School also offers special topics—board reviews, pediatric sleep, and business practices for the sleep centers.

SleepTech LLC, Kinnelon, NJ, offers Resources for Expert Sleep Training (REST) for beginners to the more experienced. One of the only A-STEP® accredited basic PSG training programs in the New York Metropolitan Area, REST is headed by a nationally published program director with more than 15 years of collegiate-level education experience. The 80-hour Intro to Sleep: Basic Polysomnography course covers current basic techniques for sleep study. With 80 hours of didactic training, the Boot Camp Basic Training program offers the basics for those with little or no health care experience. The Polysomnography Review Manual from author and distributor RCE Reviews Inc, Crown Point, Ind, serves to help board-eligible candidates prepare for their registry examination. Divided into 17 chapters, the 266-page study tool covers the majority of the registry examination matrix, including topics in waveform interpretation, electronics and filters, drug effects on sleep, scoring, equipment, patient setup, PAP therapy, supplemental oxygen, normal sleep, and ECG interpretation. Costing just under $200, the manual also contains study and test-taking tips, a glossary, abbreviations, and respiratory terms.
