Lightweight Mask

ResMed, San Diego, has released its latest development in mask technology with the introduction of the Mirage Swift™ II, a lightweight mask with new features that is 86% quieter than its predecessor, the Mirage Swift. Like the original Mirage Swift, the nasal pillows sit flexibly at the entrance of the nostrils for a secure seal during therapy, and allow users to wear glasses and read or watch television while using the mask. The Mirage Swift II features a new air vent located on the frame, which is angled downward in a direction more aligned with natural breath. The vent-hole design delivers air away from the patient and bed partner to better ensure a good night’s sleep. The mask’s new blue end cap allows for easy assembly and disassembly, and includes three pillow sizes to fit a wide range of facial and nasal structures. And with four interchangeable tube positions (up, down, left, or right), the Swift II offers more sleeping positions.

In-home Apnea Screener

Respironics Inc, Murrysville, Pa, announces the release of the RUSleeping™ RTS, a same-day, objective, in-home apneic event screener. The device is a small, easy-to-use, and unobtrusive method of screening for apneic events in persons who may be suspected of having OSA. Based on a patient’s at-home overnight score, physicians can easily interpret if the patient is a likely candidate for an immediate polysomnogram (PSG). Sleep laboratory physicians can provide the RUSleeping RTS to patients to prescreen at home for OSA before they are seen for an in-laboratory PSG. Presented with objective data regarding their apneic events, patients may more readily accept the need for a complete PSG and then more willingly accept treatment if there is a diagnosis of OSA. The RUSleeping RTS consists of a base unit and a nasal cannula.
