3B Medical has unveiled Lumin, a CPAP mask and accessories cleaner.
Lumin works with a disinfection cycle time of 5 minutes, does not use ozone, and has a 99.9% kill rate for harmful bacteria, viruses, mold, and fungus, according to 3B.
Jose Llana, MD, 3B’s national director of says in a release that the launch of the Lumin “was a direct result of several pulmonary physicians expressing concern with their COPD patients using an ozone based product. We wanted to develop a product that would not damage the CPAP machine itself and had zero risk of exposing a respiratory patient to a lung irritant.”
The Lumin will ship commercially on March 1.

How much does it cost? Does it sanitize all through the unit, the hose, humidification? Does it use moisture? Steam? Chemicals? Does it really clean or just sanitize? Does it have restrictions in terms of model manufacturer? e.g. Fisher-Paykel, Resmed, Respironics. Can you get it covered by insurance? Is it easy to manipulate if you have hand weakness or arthritis? If you use it nightly, how much would that increase the electric bill monthly?

There is evidence that UV light will damage ANY plastic or synthetic parts. I worked with UV curing for 25 years and personally had skin damaged by UV light. Yes it kills germs but there is no way it doesn’t also damage CPAP silicone cushions, hoses, and plastic water chambers too. I just don’t understand why this is not bad for your CPAP parts.
This is a 5 min UVC cycle. The proper comparison is accelerated aging of Ozone versus UVC. Ozone cracking of silicone and plastics is well documented. Competitive products use ozone. UV aging cycle is mild by comparison.
Agreed. I worked on plastics and curable UV adhesives and UV wreaks havoc on these types of materials. The system will damage your parts and accessories. Lumin should warn its customers to expect decreased performance and decreased usage time from their accessories when used.
Don’t you replace your mask, hose, ect ever so often? I replace all my stuff every 4 months, so I don’t care if it is hard on the plastic, as long as it doesn’t destroy it within those 4 months of course. 🙂 I would much rather use the UV than ozone and just replace the mask ect once in awhile. I just would like something that could clean the hose efficiently, like this Bullet they are talking about, but wondering if it really exists.
Regarding the comment on UV light. Yes, it is generally true that UV light will slowly degrade plastics. However, the proper way to evaluate is to compare accelerated aging of UV versus competitive products, which use Ozone. Ozone “cracking” of plastics is well documented. It is also a strong corrosize. Because Lumin’s cycle time is so brief (i.e. 5 minutes) there is no plastic degradation within the use life of a mask.
If the CPAP hose will fit in the tray, can the UV light properly penetrate the hose to disinfect it? I have a Resmed Airsense climate hose.
Same as others, nice option, but until the 3 main manufacturers test it out on their products it does many of us in hospital settings no good.

Why no updated comments since may or august. To me, the issue of whether the hose can be properly sanitized by the CPAP mask cleaner is ambiguous. Can it or can’t it clean the hose? If yes, but it wears our the hose material, why not ship it with a 2nd hose? You may increase sales.
When will your accessory – the Bullit / to clean the CPAP Hose – be available?
That’s what I want to know also. I want the Bullet, but there’s no info on it anywhere. I’ve googled and searched. The only thing that came up was a pic of it. Do the makers of the UV cleaner make the Bullet?
I would like clarification on whether or not the Lumin will adequately clean the hose. If not, what supplemental cleaning is required for the hose?

Is 3B lumin copa cleaner affected by airport x rays machine? May it be carried in my carry-on luggage?
I purchased the Lumin and it makes the mask smell just awful afterward.
I had the same experience– a burnt smell– when I use the machine after cleaning the hose and mask. Anyone else find this? Seems to get better after a few hours.
The Lumin cannot clean the hose or the inside of the nose pad only outside of the mask and the water reservoir, everything else you will still have to wash by hand.
It is now July 11, 2019 and it is still not clear whether the Lumin will now clean the C-Pap hose. If it now does, what Lumin product(s) does the user purchase for Resmed C-Pap machine?
Also, does the Lumin (newest model) invalidate the Resmed warranty?
