From the drawbacks for allergy sufferers to the stress relief a pet in bed provides, a DogTime.com report discusses the benefits and possible disadvantages to having your pet sleep with you.

According to a recent survey of pet owners by the American Pet Products Association, nearly half of dogs sleep in their owner’s beds. The survey found that 62% of small dogs, 41% of medium-sized dogs and 32% of large dogs sleep with their owners.

Are there health risks to bedding down with your pooch? Web MD asked Dr. Derek Damin of Kentuckiana Allergy, Asthma & Immunology in Louisville, who merely warned allergy sufferers from engaging in the practice: “Use a HEPA filter and keep them out of the bedroom to give your nose a few hours a day to recover,” he says. Other than that, the doctor sees no other health risks and, in fact, Dr. Damin sleeps with his own miniature dachshund!
