AIM Specialty Health, a specialty benefits management subsidiary of WellPoint Inc, is working with 22 health plans, to manage the costs of sleep apnea testing, according to AIS Report.

Health plans contracting with AIM require pre-authorization for sleep apnea testing. About 5% to 7% of physician requests for such testing are clinically inappropriate, while most can be conducted at home instead of in a lab, AIM has found. The program, which reviews about 30,000 cases of sleep apnea testing a month or 1,850 each day, has been running for about two-and-a-half years, Power tells The AIS Report.
