Wake Up Narcolepsy (WUN) offers a new service: free narcolepsy educational presentations tailored to an institution’s needs. WUN can provide programs ranging from 15 minutes to 1 hour long. These programs are available electronically via GoToMeeting or by conference call/Skype with a slideshow presentation for on-site distribution and display.

Topics covered can include narcolepsy symptoms, diagnosis, causes, treatments, student accommodations, and Q & A. General narcolepsy information brochures are also available for distribution at no charge. The program can be tailored for a variety of groups, such as businesses, civic groups, colleges, and other audiences.

Middle and high school educational institutions are a main group that WUN designs these presentations for via its Narcolepsy Goes to School  program. “It is imperative that educators become involved as the eyes and ears for identifying possibly narcoleptic students,” says Monica Gow, WUN executive director and co-founder.

She adds that WUN will judge the success of the educational outreach program by the momentum of the delivery and by qualitative outcomes, such as input from educators and narcoleptic students and their families. According to Gow, with the support of the school system, medical community, and family, students can be empowered to accomplish their academic and professional goals and go on to lead successful, productive lives.
