Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) may impair older women’s thinking and memory, says a new study.

The research, which was published in the January issue of Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, also suggests that treating SDB may help avoid these impairments. In addition, SDB showed to be an important risk factor for cognitive impairment in women who carried a gene linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

In the study, 448 women with an average age of 83 participated in an overnight sleep study to detect breathing problems. Standard tests for memory, attention, and other cognitive abilities were also given.
